Task 1 - Forms Of Television Advertising
There are different forms of which advertising can take.
Realist Narrative:-
This is when the advert is set to make the audience believe that the actors are in a every day life situation. Almost like they are trying to make you believe that they aren't acting and that they are actually in the situation. The positive of this is that the audience can use empathy. The negative is that these adverts can tend to be boring. For example, this advert about a cleaning product is very 'naturalistic' because it shows an every-day problem being solved:
Anti-Realist Narrative
Anti-Realist adverts are when the adverts are 'abstract'. It's as if the advert is in another world, and very hard to believe. The positive thing about these adverts are that they can be so 'out there' that they are very rememberable for being so different. The negative thing is that because the advert is so abstract, you can sometimes forget the product they are selling and only focus on the abstractness of the advert.
An advert that is anti-realist narrative is the 'rubber duck' advert. It is called 'Rubber Duckzilla'. It is advertising the drink, Oasis:
Animation:
Adverts with the use of animation usually tend to capture abstract events.
The good thing about using animation is that animation captures your eye, because the advert is so different to normal life. The negative thing about using animation in adverts is that it is quite hard to relate to animation, and can sometimes be miss-understood for different audiences because people would usually establish animation with children.
Documentary:
Documentary adverts are adverts which imply real-life test/strategies. For example, they will 'act' as if they are producing experiments, as if they are concluding real-life facts. These adverts are particularly
clever because they 'trick' the audience into thinking that these adverts are real. The bad thing about these adverts are that they can tend to be boring and/or you wont remember them. By this I mean that most adverts stick in your head, documentary adverts rarely do.
Talking Heads:
Talking heads adverts are one or two people talking to each other, dismissing the audience or the camera. These adverts are naturalistic. The good thing about these adverts are that they make the audience feel as if they are watching an every day conversation. The bad thing about these adverts are that it is very easy for the audience to lose concentration due to the adverts being rather boring.
Stand alone:
Stand alone adverts are adverts that are original/one of a kind. By this I mean that there are no follow-on adverts after the advert to carry on the advert's idea. The good thing about these types of adverts are that they are original and diverse, simply because there are only one of them. The bad thing about these types of adverts are that they can be forgotten easily.

Series:
Series adverts are where there are more than one advert to follow on from each other. Just like soap operas have episodes, so do series adverts. The good thing about these are that they are rememberable. The bad thing about these adverts is that they either become tedious or run out of ideas for them.
Lauren, you can easily achieve a Merit by adding specific references to each of the videos you have included. You have done this with your first example but not with those that come later.
ReplyDeleteTo achieve a Distinction but must analyse each advert and explain why they are a good example of the technique you are explaining.
